Tooth-friendly Guide to the Iowa State Fair's Fare

By Jill Feilmeier on July 30, 2015 in Healthy Living

Enjoy all the food that the state fair has to offer! Just be mindful of your teeth.

The Iowa State Fair is weeks away!

And if you're a foodie like us, you'll be excited to know that 15 new foods will be introduced to the 2015 Fair. While we personally can't wait to dig in and try the Apple Pie on a Stick or Ultimate Bacon Explosion, it's important to keep teeth top of mind.

It's no secret that fair foods aren't the most tooth-friendly. So what's a festive smile to do?

Plaque and tooth decay shouldn't deter you from enjoying one of the country's best state fairs! If you choose to indulge in those culinary goodies, remember these tooth-friendly tips:

° Make moderation your mantra.

While it may be tempting to enjoy a second or third funnel cake, remember: mo' sugar, mo' problems. High sugar consumption feeds the bacteria that cause plaque, which can form cavities.

° Opt for healthier alternatives.

If you have a sweet tooth, soothe your sugar cravings. Choose fruit over candy, or frozen yogurt over ice cream. If you're a meat lover, choose a lean meat, like chicken. It contains vitamin B3, which combats bad breath.

° Drink plenty of water.

Say “H2O-no” to sugary drinks and hydrate with water instead of soda. Water washes away the acids that can erode tooth enamel, and promotes saliva production.

° Brush and floss following the fun.

Your best defense against tooth decay is to brush and floss away all the treats you ate from a full day of fun (and food)!
