3 Dental Benefit Options if You Lose Your Job

Posted on June 21, 2016 in Insurance

When it comes to dental coverage options, it’s important to understand if your plan is right for you

Losing your job isn’t easy. But getting coverage shouldn’t make things harder.

Losing a job is stressful. Aside from income insecurity, you have health and dental insurance options to worry about. Here are three coverage options to consider during your employment transition:

1. Use Employer-Sponsored Benefits Before They Expire

Learn when your benefits end, as you may be covered until the end of the month in which you leave. Every week of extra coverage matters, so make a dentist appointment while you’re still covered. Click here to find a dentist near you.

2. Look into Dental Coverage Options Through COBRA

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) requires employers with 20 or more employees to offer continuation of your current insurance plans for up to 18 months after termination. COBRA will cover all health plans you had elected with your previous employer including vision and dental. The downside to COBRA? Former employees are responsible for the total premium both the employee and employer portion, which can be costly.

3. Consider an Individual Dental Coverage Plan

You may be surprised at what you’re able to afford when seeking out your own plan. Delta Dental of Iowa offers more than one individual plan, so you can find the best coverage for your needs. Between our Preventive, Preferred or Platinum plans, our dental coverage options will help you save money whether your dentist is in network or not.
